Humalog cartridges are filled with Insulin Lispro and are used with Humalog Insulin Kwikpen 200 units to deliver the Insulin. HUMALOG is a rapid-acting human insulin analog. It improves glycemic control for adults and children with diabetes mellitus. You can provide your insulin dosages more conveniently with the syringe and vial. Once you’ve used it for the first time, you can store the vial without refrigeration below 86°F (30°C). You must use it within 28 days or discard it, even if it still contains Humalog.

600 units of Humalog are contained in the disposable, single-patient use, prefilled Humalog Insulin Kwikpen 200 units/mL (“Pen”). Using the pen, you can administer more than one dose to yourself. The Dosage Knob dials 1 unit of insulin with each turn (click). A single injection might contain 1 to 60 units. You will need to provide yourself with multiple injections if your dose is greater than 60 units. With each injection, the plunger barely moves, so you might not even notice. When all 600 units in the pen have been used, the plunger will have reached the end of the cartridge.

Insulin Lispro

What is Humalog Kwikpen used for?

The Humalog Insulin Kwikpen contains Humalog Insulin Lispro, a human insulin analog with a quick onset of action, which helps manage blood sugar levels in children and adults with diabetes mellitus. With the Humalog Insulin Kwikpen, you may conveniently deliver your Insulin Lispro dose without worrying about using the correct injection technique or dealing with extra supplies like vials, needles, syringes, etc.

How does Humalog Insulin Lispro work—the glucose-lowering effect of Humalog?

Humalog Insulin Lispro, a synthetic insulin analog that functions similarly to naturally occurring insulin, is already pre-filled in the Humalog Insulin Kwikpen. The pancreas’ beta cells create insulin in healthy individuals. Naturally produced insulin helps absorb blood sugar into the liver, fat, and skeletal muscle cells, thus regulating blood sugar levels. Furthermore, it inhibits the liver’s sugar production and reduces the amount of sugar that returns to the bloodstream. Humalog Insulin Lispro enables sugar to stay in your body’s cells, which may generate energy to carry out all essential bodily activities.

Humalog Lispro is available as Humalog Kwikpen 100 and is also used as mixed insulin. Insulin Humalog Kwikpen 75/25 is an intermediate-acting and rapid-acting human insulin, and Insulin Humalog Kwikpen 50/50 is a fast- and longer-acting insulin. It will help manage your blood sugar between meals and at night, and blood sugar spikes after meals. Insulin lispro is a synthetic insulin analog component of Humalog Cartridges 75/25.

What is Type 2 diabetes?

When a person has type 2 diabetes, body cells become resistant to insulin. As a result, your body makes more insulin to force cells to respond. As a result, blood sugar imbalances will rise, leading to type 2 diabetes. High blood sugar can cause serious health problems, causing amputation or affecting your heart, vision, and kidneys.

What is Type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is an immune system disorder in which the body cannot make insulin or makes it in tiny amounts.

Insulin lispro injection is a rapid-acting human insulin analog—this type of insulin is made using DNA technology utilizing a non-pathogenic laboratory strain of Escherichia coli. With the KwikPen’s small size and uncomplicated design, you can accurately, conveniently, and on-the-go regulate your blood sugar levels at home or while on the road. Warnings and Precautions of Humalog Insulin Lispro

Never share your Humalog Insulin Kwikpen, even after changing the needle. Never use a syringe to transfer the insulin from your Humalog Insulin Kwikpen. Syringes will not accurately measure insulin in units/mL. A severe overdose might follow, resulting in dangerously low blood sugar levels that could endanger your life. If you’re blind or visually challenged, you shouldn’t use the Humalog Insulin Kwikpen without a trained user’s assistance.

Before you use your Humalog Insulin KwikPen, talk to your doctor or pharmacist if:

  • You now have or previously had liver or kidney issues.
  • You start working out more often than usual.
  • You wish to alter your regular diet.
  • You consume alcohol.
  • You’re crossing more than two time zones.
  • You’re ill
  • You are expecting a child or intend to have one.
  • You take vitamins or other medications.

How to Store Humalog Insulin Kwikpen and Cartridges?

  • Unopened Humalog Insulin Kwikpen 200 units should be stored in a refrigerator at 36°F–46°F (2°C to 8°C).
  • If the liquid has frozen, discard the pen.
  • You can keep the Humalog Insulin Kwikpen 200 units in refrigerated condition after the first use.
  • Throw away the Humalog Insulin Kwikpen 200 units after 28 days of first use, even if enough remains in the pen.

What are the side effects of Humalog Insulin Lispro?

Common adverse effects may include:

  • Hypoglycemia
  • Injection site reaction

Less common adverse effects may include:

  • Diabetic Acidosis
  • Lipoatrophy
  • Hypokalemia

The most frequently reported side effect of Insulin Lispro is low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia.

Symptoms of hypoglycemia may include:

  • fast heartbeat
  • excessive hunger
  • headache
  • nausea
  • dizziness
  • confusion
  • weakness
  • blurred vision
  • tremor
  • drowsiness
  • sweating
  • trouble concentrating
  • seizure (convulsions)

It is common to experience localized allergic skin rashes. You may have swelling, redness, and itching where you got your injection. Factors like impurities in the skin cleansing solution or your injection technique may cause these rashes.

Insufficient insulin levels can cause diabetic acidosis. This could happen if you do not remember to take your insulin, take less than your doctor has suggested, overeat, get sick, or forget to take it altogether. The first signs usually appear gradually over hours or days and include feeling tired, thirsty, flushed, and lacking in appetite. More severe symptoms include a quickened heartbeat and heavy breathing. Without treatment, it may cause a coma, loss of consciousness, or even death. You must get medical attention immediately if you encounter any of these symptoms.

The glucose-lowering effect of Humalog is related to the more rapid absorption rate from subcutaneous tissue. Rarely, the subcutaneous injection of insulin can cause either lipohypertrophy, or the growth or thickening of tissue, or lipoatrophy, which is a depression in your skin. Contact your doctor immediately if you detect any changes at or near the injection site for any of these problems.

Other less commonly reported side effects can include hypokalemia due to reduced blood potassium (K+) levels. More severe side effects can include anaphylaxis, a serious allergic reaction, and other hypersensitivities or allergic reactions.
